Ankylosing Spondylitis in Women
The influence of pregnancy, childbirth and the post-partum period is one of the most common concerns of individuals suffering from arthritis or any related conditions. Although the condition ankylosing spondylitis in women is rare, the condition can still develop. Based on research, the average age of women who are suffering from such condition is 23 years old. On this study, 21% of the respondents claim that the condition started after their pregnancy. Research has shown that 45% of women who gave birth experienced having inflamed joints or peripheral arthritis, 48% had acute anterior uveitis or inflammation of the iris, 18% had psoriasis and the remaining 16% experienced inflammatory bowel diseases.
Six hundred forty-nine women responded to the research and 2.4 of this experienced pregnancy. Out of that, 15.1% of the respondents with ankylosing spondylitis experienced miscarriage during pregnancy. It was also said that among these women, the condition is more prominent to those who bear a female child. The delivery occurred at term and the rate of the CS was higher by 58% due to the condition. The majority of the newly born babies were health with a birth weight of 7.4 lbs. However, ankylosing spondylitis had adverse effects on mothers due to the pain and stiffness that they experience.
Up to 60% of women experienced having ankylosing spondylitis 6 months after giving birth. Based on a study, the result was consistent with the flare-up of the inflammation in the majority of patients after childbirth. In this study, there are no control groups and the results were compared to an actual control group with no ankylosing spondylitis or pregnancy. It has shown that the condition does not affect fertility and fetal development. However, the improvements are more noticeable for those with a female fetus and those with a history of inflamed joints away from the spinal section or peripheral arthritis.
